islPAL Newsletter August 2014
Welcome to our second newsletter for 2014. It has been an extremely busy year so far and islPAL membership continues to grow both at home and internationally. As we continue our workshops, conferences and forums we have noticed a significant groundswell in the need for pedagogies that work for our increasing diverse student populations, and knowledge of how to create pedagogical consistency through the implementation of authoritative approaches that are clearly understood and practised school wide.
WORKSHOP - Establishing a culture of inclusion - empowering students to succeed
Our forthcoming workshop on inclusivity in October further illuminates this issue as does the conference we share with you below that focuses on deep learning and the importance of language in learning as well as language learning.
CONFERENCE 2014 - Weekend 11-12 October
We would like to share with all those interested in the teaching of language, including the current focus on students with English as an added language or dialect, that the forthcoming University of Southern Queensland’s conference at its Springfield campus is bringing exciting speakers with new, creative and innovative pedagogies. The call for abstracts encourages teachers to share a snapshot of their pedagogy and islPAL will provide three $100 prizes for snapshots of the most innovative practice. WHAT SCHOOLS ARE DOING TO STIMULATE LANGUAGE LEARNING
In an exciting partnership with Kaohsiung Municipal Girl’s School, Taiwan, Calamvale Community College is building strong relationships with its Taiwanese community in being the only State School in Queensland to teach Traditional Mandarin Chinese. Kaohsiung is the sister city of Brisbane and this program will promote greater cultural understanding and awareness, and will help prepare students to be global 21st century citizens. We congratulate all those involved for a wonderful initiative.
